Pregnancy and childbirth are fully covered by GESY. Women from 15 go straight to a gynaecologist — no referral and no co-payment.
Pregnancy and childbirth
- Antenatal care is covered by GESY with the usual co-payments: €1 per test, €10 for an ultrasound or other imaging.
- Giving birth in a state hospital or a private hospital with a GESY contract means no co-payment for the stay.
- Private packages outside GESY exist and cost roughly €2,500–5,000.
- Maternity benefit is paid by social insurance: 18 weeks, provided you have at least 26 weeks of insurance history before the leave begins.
Children's vaccinations
The Ministry of Health's 2026 national vaccination programme covers these free of charge at the paediatrician who is the child's personal doctor:

- Hepatitis B is given in three doses on a 0–1–6 month schedule starting at 2 months; the last dose no earlier than 24 weeks. If the mother is a carrier, the first dose and immunoglobulin are given within 12 hours of birth.
- Pneumococcal: the doctor chooses PCV15 (2, 4 and 11–15 months) or PCV20 (2, 4, 6 and 12–15 months). The schedule must be completed with the same vaccine.
- Meningococcal ACWY: first dose at 12 months, second at 11–12 years. A missed first dose is given free up to age 17.
- The second MMR and varicella doses may be given before age 4 — four weeks and three months after the first respectively.
- After Tdap, a Td booster is due every 10 years for life.
- Flu is free for children aged 6 months to 17 years with a chronic condition: asthma and respiratory disease, heart defects, diabetes, kidney and liver disease, neurological and neuromuscular disease, haemoglobinopathies, immunosuppression, transplant, or a BMI above 40.
Registering a child with GESY
A child registers as a dependant of the beneficiary parent: you need the birth certificate, the child's ARC and the parent's ARC. A paediatrician looks after children up to 15, a GP after that. Children under 21 have the lower annual co-payment cap of €75.
