State schools teach in Greek and are free. Private English-language schools cost €6,000–18,000 a year, and waiting lists can be several years long. Schools following other countries’ curricula are also available.

The compulsory year before school is free at state kindergartens. Private nurseries cost €300–600 a month. The compulsory starting age is gradually being lowered.

The key condition for foreigners is 5 years of continuous residence. Payments range from €588 to €2,073 a year, with applications in May.
